The Paton-Churdan teams swept the Charter Oak-Ute Bobcats in Charter Oak Jan. 22, with the girls winning the first game 64-52 and the boys winning the second game 67-49. The Rockets won all four games against the Bobcats this season.
The girls started out strong and led 14-10 after one quarter of play, but their play was “lethargic” in the second and third quarters, coach Chris Petersen said. The Bobcats outscored the Rockets by eight points in the second quarter and held a 30-26 lead at halftime.
The Bobcats built their lead to seven points, 47-40, after three quarters.
The game changed in the last quarter, though. “The girls did a really nice job of applying our press and forcing numerous turnovers,” Petersen said. “We were able to get steals and scores off the press and push the ball hard in transition much better in the fourth quarter, outscoring COU by 19 in that quarter alone. We did a nice job of keeping our composure and finishing the game despite very slow second and third quarters.”
Rocket senior Carleigh Paup, the #1 scorer in girls 1A hoops, scored a career high 41 points when the teams met Dec. 12 in Churdan. She was only one point shy of that in Charter Oak Friday night, scoring 40 of the team’s 64 points. She also led in steals with 6.
Sydney Koch scored eight points and led in assists with five. Megan Carey scored six points, Jenna Beyers scored four and led in rebounds with 10, and Grace Geisler scored three points. Kasey Lane scored three points and was credited with four blocks.
The girls are now 8-6 overall.
